Career Conversations: Are You Asking the Right Questions?

There’s no such thing as a wrong question.


It’s advice most of us have heard at some point, particularly when entering a new workplace, learning a new technology or stepping into an unfamiliar role.

The sentiment behind it is important because nobody should feel embarrassed about not knowing something, especially at the beginning of their career.

But there is another side to the conversation that is discussed far less often.

While asking questions is important, learning how to ask better questions can be just as valuable.

There is a difference between asking because you need an answer and asking because you want to understand. As your career develops, recognising that difference can change the way you learn, solve problems and work with the people around you.


The question before the question


Imagine you encounter a technical problem you haven't seen before.


Your first instinct might be to turn to someone more experienced and ask:

“How do I fix this?”

There is nothing inherently wrong with that question. Sometimes, particularly when time is critical, asking someone directly is exactly what you should do.

But before immediately looking for an answer, there is another question worth asking:

“What can I find out first?”


You might check the documents, review an error message, search previous tickets, look through internal resources or test a few possibilities yourself.

Perhaps you still don't find the solution.

That doesn't mean the research was wasted.

Instead of approaching a colleague with an entire problem to solve, you can now explain what you've found, what you've already tried and where you're stuck.


Your question changes from:

“How do I fix this?”

to:

“I've checked X and tried Y, but the issue still seems to be happening here. Is there something I'm overlooking?”


The problem hasn't changed, but the quality of the question has.

It demonstrates initiative while also giving the person helping you far more context to work with.


Don't just ask what. Ask why.


When you're learning something new, asking what is often the natural starting point.

  • What does this command do?
  • What does this configuration mean?
  • What happens if this setting changes?


These questions help you establish knowledge but understanding often comes from the question that follows:

Why?

  • Why are we using this approach?
  • Why was the system designed this way?
  • Why does changing one component affect another?


Knowing what something does can help you complete the task in front of you. Understanding why it works that way can help you approach the next problem without needing the same instructions again.

This becomes particularly important in technology, where there is rarely only one way to solve a problem.

A solution might work perfectly in one environment and make very little sense in another. Without understanding the reasoning behind a decision, it can be easy to learn the steps without learning how to decide when those steps are appropriate.


Let your questions show your thinking


Asking a good question doesn't always mean having lots of background information.

Sometimes, it simply means showing how you arrived at it.


Consider the difference between:

“Which option should I choose?”

and:

“I'm leaning towards option A because of X, but I'm concerned about Y. Does that reasoning make sense?”


The second question gives someone something much more useful to respond to: your thought process.

If your conclusion is wrong, they can help you understand where your reasoning changed direction. If you're right, they can confirm why. Either way, you're learning more than you would from simply being told which option to choose.

This is an important part of becoming more independent professionally.

The objective isn't to reach a point where you never need to ask for help. Even the most experienced professionals ask questions.

The difference is that, over time, your questions begin to contain more of your own thinking.


Your questions should grow with you


The questions you ask at the beginning of your career probably won't be the same questions you ask five or ten years later.

Initially, you might ask:

               ↓

“What does this do?”

Then:

               ↓

“How does this work?”

Eventually:

               ↓

“Why do we do it this way?”

And perhaps later:

               ↓

“Is there a better way to do it?”


That progression matters.

As your knowledge increases, curiosity can move beyond understanding individual tasks and towards questioning systems, processes and assumptions.


Instead of only asking:

“How do we fix this issue?”

you might start asking:

“Why does this issue keep happening?”


Instead of:

“How can we make this process faster?”

you might ask:

“Why does this process take so long in the first place?”

Or even:

“Do we still need this process?”


At that point, questions aren't simply helping you learn.

They're helping you identify problems that might otherwise go unquestioned.


Curiosity isn't about questioning everything


There is an important distinction here.

Being curious doesn't mean endlessly questioning every decision or refusing to accept an answer until you've explored every possible alternative.

Nor does initiative mean spending hours trying to solve something alone because you're afraid asking for help will make you look inexperienced.

There is a balance.

Sometimes the right question is one you research independently.

Sometimes it is one you bring to a colleague.

Sometimes it is one you ask immediately because the consequences of getting something wrong are far greater than the value of figuring it out yourself.

Part of professional development is learning to recognise the difference.

The goal isn't to ask the fewest questions possible, it's to make the questions you do ask count.


The people with the best questions don't always have the most answers


It's easy to associate expertise with knowing.

The more experienced someone becomes, the more answers we expect them to have.

But expertise can also change the questions someone knows to ask.

An experienced professional may recognise an assumption that everyone else has overlooked. They might notice that a team is solving the symptom rather than the cause, or challenge a process that has continued simply because “that's how we've always done it”.

Their value isn't necessarily that they immediately know the answer.

Sometimes, it's that they know where to look.

That mindset can begin much earlier in your career than you might think.

You don't need years of experience before you can research independently, explain your reasoning or ask why something works the way it does.

You simply need the curiosity to look beyond the first answer.


Keep asking but keep improving the question


You will never reach a stage in your career where you know everything.

Technology changes. Businesses change. Problems change. The knowledge that made someone an expert yesterday may need updating tomorrow.

So asking questions will always be part of professional life.

What can change is the quality of those questions.


Ask for context, not just instructions and understand the reasoning, not just the answer.


Do some investigating of your own, then bring what you've discovered into the conversation.

And as your experience grows, don't only question what you don't understand. Question the assumptions, processes and approaches that everyone already takes for granted.

Because curiosity isn't measured by how many questions you ask, it's reflected in the questions you learn to ask.
